Air conditioning servicing in Barcelona
We carry out preventive servicing and repair of split, multi-split and ducted air conditioning across Barcelona and the metropolitan area. A unit with dirty coils and a marginal refrigerant charge cools worse and costs more to run: the annual service pays for itself on the electricity bill.
Quick answer
Servicing a split air conditioning unit covers cleaning the filters and indoor coil, clearing the condensate drain, checking pressures and refrigerant charge, and verifying electrical consumption. It should be done once a year, before summer. Callout service across Barcelona and the metropolitan area.
Common faults and what we check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Cools poorly or takes forever to bring the temperature down | Dirty filters and indoor coil, or a low refrigerant charge from a micro-leak. | We clean filters and coil, measure pressures and superheat, and trace the leak if the charge is low. |
| Dripping water indoors | Condensate drain blocked with debris, or a tray at the wrong angle. | We clear the condensate line under pressure and check the tray fall. |
| Smells bad when it starts up | Mould and bacteria on the indoor coil and blower wheel from trapped moisture. | Sanitising clean of the coil and blower wheel with a dedicated product, not just the filter. |
| The outdoor unit is very noisy | Unbalanced fan, loose fixings, or a poorly damped compressor. | We balance the fan, tighten the mountings and check the anti-vibration mounts. |
| Shuts down on its own or shows a fault | High-pressure protection (dirty outdoor coil), a failed sensor, or a board fault. | We clean the outdoor coil, test the sensors and read the manufacturer's fault code. |
| Electricity consumption has shot up | Dirty coils, incorrect refrigerant charge, or a unit permanently running at its limit. | Full performance check: pressures, temperatures, actual consumption and compressor current. |

What an air conditioning service actually includes
- Cleaning the indoor unit filters.
- Cleaning the indoor coil (evaporator) and blower wheel, which is where the mould behind the bad smell accumulates.
- Cleaning the outdoor coil (condenser), which is critical for running costs: if it can't shed heat, the compressor works under strain.
- Clearing and testing the condensate drain.
- Measuring pressures and temperatures to verify the refrigerant charge is correct.
- Electrical checks: compressor consumption, condition of connections and protective devices.
- Functional test in cooling and heating (heat pump models).
Refrigerant gases and F-Gas regulations
Air conditioning equipment runs on fluorinated gases regulated by the European F-Gas Regulation. Two things follow from that in practice: refrigerant must not be released into the atmosphere, and topping up without first repairing the leak isn't just poor technical practice, it's contrary to the regulation.
When we find a unit has lost charge, we locate the leak point, repair it, pull a vacuum and recharge with the exact quantity stated on the manufacturer's plate. A unit that "needs regassing every summer" has an unrepaired leak.
When to book the service, and why before June
The ideal time is spring, before the heat arrives. Two very practical reasons: first, you go into summer with the unit at full performance instead of discovering the fault on the first 33-degree day; second, in July and August demand across Barcelona spikes and lead times stretch out across the whole trade.
If your unit hasn't been serviced in over a year and you notice it cools less than last summer, that isn't your imagination: it's a dirty coil or a low charge.

Frequently asked questions
How often should air conditioning be serviced?
Once a year for domestic units, preferably in spring. In premises with heavy use (bars, offices, shops) two services a year are advisable.
Why does my air conditioning smell when I switch it on?
Mould and bacteria built up on the indoor coil and blower wheel, where moisture remains after every use. Cleaning the filter alone doesn't solve it: the coil and blower wheel need sanitising.
Does it need regassing every year?
No. A refrigeration circuit is sealed: if it's losing gas, it has a leak. Regassing every year without repairing the leak wastes your money and breaches fluorinated gas regulations. We find the leak and repair it.
My split unit is dripping water indoors — what is it?
The condensate drain is blocked or the tray is at the wrong angle. It's a quick job: the line is cleared under pressure and the drainage is tested.
Do you install new air conditioning?
Our focus is servicing and repairing existing equipment. Give us a ring about your specific case and we'll tell you whether we can help or point you in the right direction.
Do you cover ducted and multi-split systems?
Yes, as well as wall-mounted splits. Tell us the type of system and the make when you book so we bring the right materials.
