Cooker hood repair in Barcelona
We repair wall-mounted, decorative, island, cabinet-integrated hoods and recirculating units across Barcelona and the metropolitan area. It's the most neglected appliance in the kitchen: accumulated grease eventually destroys the impeller and the motor, and many "faults" are really just missed maintenance.
Quick answer
When a cooker hood stops extracting, the usual causes are a failed motor start capacitor, an impeller seized with grease, or saturated filters. If it hums but doesn't spin, it's almost always the capacitor. We repair wall, island, integrated and decorative hoods at your home in Barcelona within 24–48 hours.
Common faults and what we check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| It hums but the impeller doesn't turn | Worn-out motor start capacitor, or an impeller seized with hardened grease. | We replace the capacitor (by far the most common fault) and strip and degrease the impeller. |
| Barely extracts even though the motor runs | Saturated metal filters, an exhausted carbon filter, or a blocked or undersized ducting run. | We clean or replace the filters and check the route and diameter of the extraction duct. |
| Completely dead | Supply fault, blown board fuse, or a failed control panel. | We check incoming voltage, the fuse and the control board before touching the motor. |
| The lights don't come on | Blown bulbs or LEDs, corroded lamp holders, or a failed LED driver. | We replace the lamps or the complete LED module depending on the model. |
| Much noisier than it used to be | Worn motor bearings, an impeller unbalanced by grease, or loose mountings. | We balance and clean the impeller, tighten the mountings and assess the motor if a bearing has gone. |
| Touch controls unresponsive | Moisture and grease on the panel, or a degraded control board. | We clean the panel and check the board and its connector. |

The capacitor: the number one cooker hood fault
A cooker hood motor is a single-phase induction motor that needs a start capacitor to begin turning at all. That capacitor degrades with heat and age. When it loses capacitance the motor receives power but can't get moving: hence it hums, gets hot and doesn't spin.
It's a small, inexpensive component, and replacing it restores the hood to full performance. Before you write the whole hood off because "the motor's burnt out", it's worth letting us check: in many cases the motor is perfectly fine.
Ducted or recirculating: they're not the same thing
A ducted hood expels air through a duct to the outside or into the building's shunt. A recirculating hood has no duct at all: it filters the air through activated carbon and returns it to the kitchen.
Plenty of people in Barcelona flats have a recirculating hood and complain that "it smells". It isn't broken: the carbon filter is exhausted and needs replacing every few months depending on use. Carbon filters aren't washed, they're replaced.
Maintenance that extends your hood's life
- Metal filters in the dishwasher every 3–4 weeks if you cook daily. Short programme, normal detergent.
- Carbon filter: replace every 3–6 months on recirculating hoods.
- Switch the hood on before you start cooking and leave it running for a few minutes afterwards: it extracts far better and grease doesn't settle as it cools.
- Don't default to maximum speed. The middle setting extracts well and puts far less wear on the motor.

Frequently asked questions
My hood hums but doesn't turn — is the motor burnt out?
Usually not. In the vast majority of cases it's the start capacitor, a small and inexpensive part. It's worth checking before writing the hood off.
How often should the filters be cleaned?
Metal filters every 3 to 4 weeks if you cook daily; they can go in the dishwasher. The carbon filter on recirculating hoods isn't washed at all: it's replaced every 3–6 months.
My hood smells even though it works — why?
If it's a recirculating hood, the activated carbon filter is exhausted and no longer traps odours. It gets replaced, not washed. If it's ducted, check the duct isn't blocked.
Do you repair island and decorative hoods?
Yes, including ceiling-suspended island hoods, decorative wall hoods, cabinet-integrated units and recirculating groups.
Can you change the LED lights?
Yes. Depending on the model we replace individual lamps or the complete LED module with its driver.
Is it worth repairing an older hood?
Almost always, because the typical faults (capacitor, greased-up impeller, lights, controls) are low cost. We only advise against it when the motor bearings have gone and the part is no longer manufactured.
