Limescale in Barcelona: why your dishwasher suffers more here
The water across the Barcelona area is hard water. That means limescale deposits on the heating element, in the spray arms and around the sump, making the machine heat worse, wash worse and fail sooner. It is by far the single biggest factor shortening dishwasher life in this region.
The countermeasure is simple and a great many people have it set up wrongly: the dishwasher's built-in water softener, which needs dishwasher salt and a hardness level correctly set in the appliance menu. If you use all-in-one tablets and skip the salt, in hard water you're under-treating. On every visit we check and adjust that setting at no extra cost.
The most common error codes and what they mean
Every manufacturer uses its own numbering, but the families are the same:
- Fill error (E1, F1, i10...): no water entering. Solenoid valve, inlet filter or a closed stopcock.
- Drain error (E2, F2, i20...): not emptying. Filter, drain pump or a blocked trap.
- Heating error (E3, F3...): not reaching temperature. Element or NTC sensor.
- Leak / Aquastop error (E15, F4, i30...): the base tray sensor has detected water. There's an internal leak to trace.

- Take out and clean the filter in the base of the sump, including the fine mesh. That alone resolves a good share of "it won't drain" calls.
- Check the drain hose isn't crushed behind the cabinet and that the sink trap isn't blocked.

Frequently asked questions
My dishwasher won't drain — is it serious?
Hardly ever. In most cases it's the filter in the base of the sump or the drain pump impeller jammed by a scrap of food or a piece of glass. It's a quick repair and one of the cheapest.
Why do the dishes come out wet when the programme finishes normally?
Usually a lack of rinse aid, an element not heating enough in the final phase, or a blocked drying condenser. We check all three on the visit.
Do I need salt if I use all-in-one tablets?
In the Barcelona area, with hard water, yes it's worth it. All-in-one tablets cover medium hardness; in hard water the internal softener needs dedicated salt and the hardness level correctly set in the appliance menu.
My dishwasher smells — what should I do?
Clean the filter and sump, check the spray arms and run an empty cycle at maximum temperature with a dedicated cleaner. If the smell persists, there's usually debris built up in the waste pipe or trap.
Is it worth repairing an 8-year-old dishwasher?
Usually yes, if the fault is the pump, element, solenoid valve or filter. We only advise against it when the wash motor or control board fails on an already very old machine.
