Bearings: the repair worth thinking twice about
When a washing machine makes a deafening noise on spin, it's almost always the drum bearings. The underlying cause is usually the water seal, which as it deteriorates lets moisture through to the bearings and rusts them.
It's a labour-intensive repair: the machine has to be opened up and, on many current models, the outer tub is sealed at the factory and can't be opened without replacing it entirely. In those cases the cost climbs sharply and it usually isn't worth it against a new machine.
We'll tell you that plainly at the diagnosis stage, with the actual figure, even when it means there's no repair for us. We'd rather that than you spending the money twice.
The three things that shorten a washing machine's life most
- Overloading the drum. Excess weight punishes bearings, shock absorbers and belt. The wash is worse too, because the laundry can't move.
- Never cleaning the pump filter. It's behind a flap at the bottom front. It's worth checking every few months.
- Always washing cold. Low-temperature programmes build up biofilm and detergent residue in the door seal and tub. One empty 60°C cycle a month prevents it.
Before calling us: checks you can do yourself
- The pump filter: put a flat tray underneath, open the bottom flap and clear out whatever is in there. It's the most common cause of "it won't drain".
- Stopcock and inlet filter: if it won't take water, check the tap is open and that the small mesh in the hose union isn't blocked with limescale.
- Door fully closed: if it won't lock, check nothing is caught in the door seal.
- Levelling: if it moves, check with a spirit level that all four feet sit firmly.

My washing machine is very loud on spin — can it be fixed?

Why won't my washing machine drain?
In most cases the pump filter is blocked with coins, clips, lint or debris. You can check it yourself: it's behind a flap at the bottom front. If it's still the same after cleaning, the impeller or pump is damaged.
The machine has power but won't start — what is it?
Most commonly the electromagnetic door interlock: if the board doesn't get confirmation that the door is locked, it won't begin the programme. It's an affordable part and a quick replacement.
